Basics

What an election poll tells you

An election poll answers the “Sunday question”: “Which party would you vote for if the election were held next Sunday?” Usually 1,000 to 2,500 people are surveyed, by telephone or online. The answers are weighted by age, gender, region and education, and undecided voters and non-voters are excluded. The result describes the mood during the survey period, not the outcome of a future election.

Every individual poll has a margin of error of around two to three points for the larger parties. That is why we average each pollster's latest poll: the average fluctuates less than any single poll and evens out systematic differences between pollsters, the so-called house effects.

If you want to know what the numbers mean for election day, there is a forecast for every upcoming election with seats, majority probabilities and the historical accuracy of polls. Which pollster came closest to the result is shown in the pollster comparison.
